A region with two official languages. A room in which some of the guests read the other language. an award with interpreters. In each case the evening has to work twice.
The seams are immediately noticeable. The screen shows a title in one language and the host says another. A guest reads one language and listens to the other.
Decide the language of each part
“Bilingual” is not enough as instruction. Decide early on which language will lead each part of the evening: the opening, the award titles, the thanks, the closing. Agree on the titles in both languages before printing them.
Give the host a script that his mouth can handle
Rehearse the script out loud with the host. A fluent host can sustain a transition. A host working from a second language needs short sentences, written to be said.
If the host does not speak the second language well enough to correct you, use a second host or a recorded voice. Don't ask him to perform a language he can't amend.
Count on a longer night
Saying the same thing twice takes longer. Time the rehearsal with the actual script, not a guess, and build the running order from there.
Interpreters and names
Give performers the script and a glossary of titles well in advance of the rehearsal. Ask for the pronunciation of each name early. Let them know as soon as something is cut.
Do not translate the name of a person, a club or a competition. Use what the candidate gave. Prepare the sound.
Screens
Text in one language can run longer than in the other. Test each layout in both. Avoid a screen in one language and a host in the other for the whole night.
One change, two languages
A title that changes must change in the script, on the screen and in the programme, in both languages, at the same time. If each language has its own copy, the change is written several times and one is left behind.
If both versions come from the same registry, it changes once. Prepare connects the running order, places and presences. Run is where the screen shows what is there.
Eventblox® is available in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Italian. This is the language of the platform. The language of the ceremony is what you decide for the room. The change, whatever the language of the text, is made once.
Decide the language for each part. Wake up titles early. Test the screens in both languages. Instruct interpreters with pronunciation.
Frequently asked questions
Does the host have to be bilingual?
Help. If you don't speak the second language well enough to correct it, use a second host or a recorded voice.
Are the names of the award recipients translated?
No. Use the name as the entrant gave it. Prepare the pronunciation.
How long does a second language add?
More than a ceremony in just one language. Time yourself in rehearsal with the real script and build the running order from there.
